As the shadesiders delved ever deeper into the earth, they discovered unusual crystals that seemed to hum with an otherworldly energy. Soon, they discovered that these crystals would grow within the bodies of any living creature they cut into, slowly transforming flesh to stone. While initially horrified, people soon discovered that this process was mostly painless, and gave these creatures power over life and death itself. They could lend the semblance of life to constructs and dead bodies, and take life from those that threatened them. With the eternal War ever raging, the shadesiders soon embraced this dangerous gift and researched it, with the newly founded order of the stoneseekers growing ever stronger.
Soon, they discovered that the more a stoneseeker used this power, the more their body turned to crystal. While this process could sometimes be guided, it could not be completely stopped without physically cutting out the affected areas, removing the link to the power in the process. As the elders became more stone than flesh, they heard whispers of forces beyond their understanding, telling theme of a strange and wondrous possibility. By surrendering to the crystals within, they could undergo a metamorphosis, emerging in a bbq and glorious form. Committed to the pursuit of knowledge they had begun, they followed this advice, going deep into the crystal mines and far from prying eyes. For days they stayed underground, until many assumed that they had died there. Finally, when all hope was beginning to fade, creatures emerged from the mines, bearing a strong resemblance to the elders and claiming their names but made entirely of crystal. No longer human or dwarf, they claimed a new name: Crystalline
